Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the fingerprinting process take?
Most fingerprinting appointments at Houston Fingerprint take 10 to 15 minutes from start to finish. This includes identity verification, card completion, fingerprint capture, and quality review. Walk-in appointments are welcome, and we rarely have waiting times that significantly extend your visit.
What is the difference between ink fingerprinting and Live Scan?
Ink fingerprinting (ink and roll) uses FBI-approved ink applied to your fingers and rolled onto a physical fingerprint card (FD-258 or SF-87). The card is then mailed to the requesting agency. Live Scan is a digital method where your fingerprints are captured electronically and transmitted directly to the agency, no physical card or mailing required. The method required depends entirely on the agency requesting your background check.
What ID do I need to bring?
You must bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a U.S. driver’s license, state-issued ID card, U.S. passport or passport card, military ID, or permanent resident card (green card). Expired IDs cannot be accepted.
What if my fingerprints are rejected by the FBI?
FBI rejections are typically due to poor image quality caused by dry skin, scars, worn ridge detail, or improper capture technique. If your prints are rejected, we will recapture them at no additional charge. To help prevent rejections, moisturize your fingertips the night before your appointment and avoid hand sanitizer immediately prior to your visit.
How long does FBI processing take after submission?
The FBI typically processes fingerprint-based background check requests (Identity History Summary) within 3 to 10 business days after receiving your fingerprint cards. Processing times may be longer during high-volume periods. For electronic Live Scan submissions to state agencies like Texas DPS, results are generally returned within 2 to 5 business days.
